Set 1: Backdrop
Using Moon as a motif, the backdrop is composed of 86 canvas in three sizes (30 x 40 cm, 40x50cm, 50x60cm), and divided into three layers imitating different moon phrases: waxing crescent, waning gibbous and full moon. Moon has long been a symbol of driving force for madness and randomness in the world of Literature, and full moon triggers evil and darkness in human mind and body, (where men change to werewolves) thus the three layers of backdrop is merged as the scene progress and reach the climax. To intensify the layering effect, canvas are arranged back and front and fixed with L-shape connections, where the ones as the periphery are with longer distance from each other to bring out the shadow gap effect in reinforcing the sense of fragmentation, which reflects the mental state of the main character. |
Hidden Motif
To dramatize stage effect, a hidden motif- Eye, is added onto the moon, where the sphere becomes the iris, alluding to the "Awakening" of human dark side. This also echoes a Chinese saying of "Heaven's watching everything you do". A hidden eye is achieved by using luminous paint to draw the eye, in which the colour is only visible to audience when UV light is on. In combination of a controlled frequency of strobe light, a blinking eye is shown in the scene "Full Moon". |
Set 2
Solo-Canvas In solo scene, a change of scale is adopted by leaving the main character alone with a large canvas, The canvas serves as a plane of mirror for the main character to have a dialogue with himself. The shadow created act as his reflection on the mirror and also features the inner dark self which the character is to face throughout the plot. |
The big canvas can also evolves into a 3D space by making use of the lighting effect. When down light is applied from up stage left, the shadow of the canvas create a sense of pressure and swallow up the floor of the stage. A new plane is created by the shadow and an imaginary plane is created when the solo dancer dance along the edge of the shadow towards upstage. |
